Congratulations on the successful completion of our joint meeting with the Center for Applied Energy Research of the University of Kentucky

On Dec 8th 2017, UKy-CAER (the Center for Applied Energy Research of the University of Kentucky) and HangZhou SNNA CHEM TECH CO., LTD jointly launched a front-end engineering design seminar for the project “Coal Gasification Thermoelectric Device” in Beijing, China.

The overall objective of this project is to complete a front-end engineering design (FEED) study for a 5 MWe equivalent poly-generation unit to be located at an industrial park in Hazard, Eastern KY. The plant will utilize waste coal fines and biomass when available, alleviating secondary environmental impacts from impoundment sites. This project will develop a cross industry synergy in a rural, remote area that will serve as a model for future economic development in depressed regions. The gasification unit will generate electricity, provide heat and power for building and process operations and generate value added liquid hydrocarbons with an attached Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) skid as a load-following alternative to minimize the impact of frequent start ups and shutdowns on the gasifier operability and refractory lifetime. Fuel for the gasification unit will consist of recovered coal and sawdust supplied by a nearby coal fines impoundment and lumber company, respectively.  

The representatives of both parties agreed on the scope of work that was developed to meet the basic FEED study requirements include 1) Technology Design Basis, 2) Engineering Design Elements. The FEED study will be a thorough study and result in a model for application of the proposed technology throughout Eastern KY and other coal communities, nationwide.

UKy-CAER will provide a block flow diagram (BFD) with appropriate description and major operating conditions & specific requirement on major process equipment.

SNNA CHEM will create a process simulation with an output of stream tables and heat and mass balances, complete process design package.
